Hayleys Fentons, in partnership with the Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management Department (CCCRMD), launched a mangrove restoration initiative along the Bolgoda Lake shoreline in November 2023.

The project focuses on restoring mangrove ecosystems, strengthening biodiversity, supporting community resilience and contributing to climate action. The initiative has now progressed from the establishment phase to the monitoring phase.

Restoration sites: Kaduruduwa, Kiraladuwa, Moratuwa New Bridge and Egodauyana South, Moratuwa.

The initial plantation target was 1,000 Rhizophora apiculata propagules. Following plantation and monitoring, more than 1,300 propagules were recorded as surviving and thriving, exceeding the original target.

Independent field verification by SGS Lanka (Pvt) Ltd recorded approximately 7.62 MT of CO₂-equivalent carbon currently sequestered, with potential storage of approximately 11.2 MT CO₂-equivalent at full maturity.

Each mangrove sapling carries a unique QR-code tag, enabling individual growth and survival tracking throughout the monitoring period. Field inspections by SGS Lanka (Pvt) Ltd support independent verification of project progress and survival data.
